NME Awards

Just browsing through the list of winners, there seem to be few suprises, Artic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, blah blah blah. (If anyone has heard the A.M. album I'd like to know what you think - the more I've heard of them, the more they seem to be a northern Libertines rather than anything particularly special). The gong-giving appeared to be pretty predictable, and I could think to myself, "Yes, even if I don't agree with the awards per se, at least I know where they are coming from."

However, two awards have confounded me.

Best Film - Harry Potter
Sexiest Female - Madonna

Harry Potter as best film. Now, although I can accept that people over 16 can enjoy Harry Potter, I'd have thought that they're not going to consider it their favorite film. Therefore, to age the voters, I'd guess somewhere in the region of 10 - 15.

But then we have Madonna winning sexiest female. First things first, Madonna isn't sexy. I am stating that as a fact. I am willing to accept she looks good FOR HER AGE. But the video of her Abba cover-song-thing makes my skin crawl. I can't watch it.

So who voted her sexiest female? If we assume that it is the same readers who voted Harry Potter best film, then there are some very strange teenage boys out there.

I copied the AM album from a friend, and would suggest you do the same: it is worth having but not worth buying. Parts of the album are brilliant, and overall it is really enjoyable, but they sound too much like the Libertines with a Sheffield accent and some of the songs are clearly fillers. Good but over-rated.

Madonna is sexy. Not sexiest. But sexy. Whatever her age...

Just as I thought - I shall wait until my bro gets the AMs and then, er, borrow it.

I seem to remember that you don't mind "old people gettin' a bonk on", which means that your opinion on Madonna was totally expected and already marked as being wrong, even before you typed it.

I just think that older women can be sexy. Don't think they all are, or that 'oldness' is in itself sexy...

You may find this freakish, but in the long run, I feel it will serve me well. You do realsie that Helen will look older as she, er, gets older...

I accept older women can be sexy. However, Madonna in a pink lycra outfit does not fall into my definition of sexy. It's horrible. When she is more appropriately attired, I have no problem with her. It just doesn't seem to ever happen.

Anyway, to further explain why Madonna won, I see the other nominees were Meg White and 3 lead singers from fairly minor indie bands.

what's wrong with Meg White?

There's nothing wrong with Meg as such, she just doesn't fit into my definition of "sexy". Celebrity Sexiness is defined on a scale very similar to the Beaufort scale used to measure wind speed. Meg and Madonna are mere breezes, causing slight interest due to their attractiveness. I don't write these laws, they're just fact.

Well, I must admit that whilst Madonna and Meg have, in my opinion a level of sexiness, neither come close to such beauties as Beth orton or Chan Marshall. Or, for a mainstream mag like nme, why not Natalie Imbruglia or Myleene Klass, both of whom are sexilicious.

Such oversights are irrelevant, however, when it is considered that elsewhere, The Strokes won Best International Band (which, one assumes, simply means best band period, since everywhere is international). This is surely the most ridiculous utterly awful choice for an award ever. I feel a little sick...

More importantly, what about the awarding of Sexiest Male to Pete Doherty at the NME awards? What is WRONG with everybody?

And 'sexilicious'? Have you been moonlighting as a Smash Hits reporter? Still not as horrifying as 'old people gettin' a bonk on' though.

Meg White is the definition of sexy.
